The Golf Croquet Mixed Doubles Handicap Final 2010

2010 WINNERS

The tournament final (Wendy & Ron -v- Heloise & Tony) was played in persistent (and ever increasing) drizzle on the afternoon of Tuesday 26th October. The match was nip and tuck over the first eight hoops, which the teams shared 4-4, and with both bisques already used an exciting finish seemed to be in prospect. The crowd (consisting entirely of a few overflying birds) were squawking enthusiastically, although the conditions (both atmospheric and underfoot) were hardly conducive to the highest standard of play. Heloise & Tony then managed to run hoops 9 and 10, leaving them requiring only one more hoop for victory. There then followed a titanic struggle for hoop 11, with both teams having chances and making good clearances, and eventually Tony managed to squeeze his ball through the hoop from close range, to secure the victory by 7 hoops to 4. As always, the match was played in a friendly but competitive spirit throughout, the only dampener (literally) being the unpleasant weather.

Tony & Heloise beat Wendy & Ron 7-4

Semi-final results:

Wendy & Ron beat David Frost & Anna 7-3

Tony & Heloise beat Simon & Barbara 7-4

Association Croquet Individual Handicap Knock-out Competition Semi-Finals:

On a beautiful sunny October afternoon John beat Wendy by 26-7 and in the other semi-final played a few days later the victor was Brian Havill whose fine play aided by plenty of bisques saw him beat Ken by 26-14. Whatever the outcome of the final Brian should certainly be congratulated regardless, having reaching his second final of the season.

Association Final postponed due to injury

The final between John and Brian which was provisionally scheduled for Sunday 10th October has been postponed due to John having an injury. Given the current poor state of the lawns it seems probable that the final may now be postponed until the new season.

Golf Croquet Knock-out Final 2010

David Minihane snatched a win in a closely fought Golf Croquet Knock-out Final when he beat a gallant Brian Havill 7-5 in front of a rather small group of keenly interested onlookers on Sunday 26th September. Many congratulations to both players for reaching a final that was a credit to the Club's ever improving newcomers and could quite easily have gone either way as a result of superb play by both contestants. David and Brian are both playing just their second season with Enfield Croquet Club and might still be regarded as rookies at some other Clubs. Despite the inclement weather the finalists were both applauded off the court as the days games were played out in series of light showers rather than seeing a gloriously sunny finale to this particular competition.

David and Brian played out a keenly fought final in inclement weather
It's always the winner with the biggest grin isn't it?

Meanwhile in the Ladder League the top division showed just how closely many games are played out in competitions within the club this season. This league was also completed in adverse conditions where it turned out that all five players managed to win two and lose two, leaving our competitions organiser yet another mathematical conundrum to determine the league's final outcome. .

The Ladder League Handicap Golf Croquet Tournament

This competition replaced the previous season's league and just as in 2009 most participants found it to be a great way of meeting other members. Ladder league participants in fact comprised a very decent majority of Club's membership. The league matches themselves were carried out on various days and at a vast variety of differing times throughout the season. A simple ploy that enabled the competition to be played whenever it suited the members to do so. In the main we were very lucky with the weather and this enabled the majority of leagues to be completed, even though quite a few became rather last minute affairs. Holidays, illness, work and the occasional unwanted heavy rain quite naturally interfered with the arrangement of fixtures, however this didn't deter from the many great matches that were enjoyed by so many players throughout the season.

I'm quite sure that the vast majority of participants will be delighted to hear that the intention is to carry the Ladder League over to the start of 2011 season. To that end the final September League tables are shown below.

Many thanks are owed to Terry, our competitions organiser, for seeing so many leagues through to completion.

Golf Croquet League

Our 2009 Golf Croquet league proved to be not only successful but an ideal way in which new recruits got the chance to become acquainted with the vast majority of club members during the course of the competition. In addition many participants found that the league became a major learning experience in relation to both the tactical and technical aspects of the game when playing against some of our more established members, especially those who represent the Club in competitions. All in all this league was great fun, a pleasant and sociable experience and for some an ideal learning curve which made it very much worth while. Final Standings as at 13th December:

So a big thanks to Terry for the, at times, somewhat taxing task of not only running this competition but for also keeping everyone up to date with the latest league tables and games outstanding.

The 2009 organiser Terry James had this to say on the closing date of the league:

On behalf of the Committee I'd like to thank all those who participated, especially everyone who managed to complete all their matches. There were as you may be aware a few teething problems which included injuries, illness, conflict of preferred playing days, holidays and more particularly the wet weather towards the end of the competition. New concepts don't always necessarily run smoothly or meet with the approval of all. But with the lessons learnt by both the organiser and those participating I feel we should be able to refine and improve things for the coming season should we decide to repeat the exercise.
