It's 'Lawn One' Tom... but not not as we know it

MAY PHOTO-FEATURE: The vegetable plot thickens

Well that at least is what one member has suggested Lawn One currently resembles. Debates on what to grow there will doubtless continue throughout the summer. Personally I think some high quality grass would be favourite, although it has been pointed out that some very fast growing cash crops might benefit Club finances in the short term.

As you will have seen Tom in his latest ongoing role as tractor driver has been working away on the latest stage of development for what we are all hoping will be a lovely new lawn. And as you can also see (above right) sometimes Tom even gets some additional assistance every now and again.

As can be seen from the photo (above right) our bulb planting in the Autumn had the desired effect. This season we will be working to keep the flower beds clear. Although the turnout for our first session was small we'd like to thank those members who made it along for a morning's bash at the beds. Last weeks gardening crew consisted of David and Margaret Lygoe, Tony Elliott, Ron Phippin and Brian Dawes our photographer who was far to busy complaining about putting his back out to take any photos of all the hard work. So a start has been made on the beds and some observant members may even notice that numerous brambles and assorted weeds have already met their demise. If you couldn't make it along this time around we look forward to your assistance for our next session

APRIL PHOTO-FEATURE: Blessed are the hole makers

A behind the scenes look at what goes on at Enfield Croquet Club when you're not there to see it.

Not everyone just gets to spend a fun morning on the lawns, some members put in a fair bit of graft to enable the remaining membership to enjoy themselves.

As recently as Thursday March the 31st our first class crew of hoop setters laid out the two full lawns for the first of what will be many times this season, given that our intention is to move the hoops on a more regular basis. On Monday the 11th April they were at it again in order to facilitate the two half lawns required for Saturday's upcoming training session. Firstly numerous measurements are calculated, measured, marked and checked - all being staked out with some more than useful wooden bisques which in this case were used to mark out the half courts on lawn 3. Carefully measured alignments are also checked by eye and after what seems like an hour or so of measuring the pilot holes are then drilled. It may look easy enough but wielding a heavy club hammer to smash home the holes is reasonably hard work, even more so when the ground gets harder during the summer months. Having hammered home the metal implement it then has to be hauled out again before the actual hoops can be tapped home with a rubber mallet into the resulting pair of holes. The final stage is to put in the centre pegs before deploying Basil's very excellent hoop remover to take out all 12 hoops without making the holes any bigger. This enables a snug fit next time a game is played.

Anyone wishing to buy the hole makers a beer by way of appreciation should ask Davids Frost and Lygoe for details of their preferred beverages. Thanks guys.

The Lawns update February 2011

As you can see the grass on Lawn One is being being killed off prior to the whole area being rotivated and levelled. The photos shown above and below are either an alien who has recently landed or Tom as you've never seen him before. Fancy dress is seemingly a necessity for such work.

On this occasion Tom was respraying those few patches that hadn't quite taken the hint. Lawns two and three by the way are looking really rather good considering it is only February.

The Lawns January 2011

Recognise this place?
And yes these are all colour photographs. It was amazingly peaceful on the lawns when these photos were taken, but what was even most amazing was that even less than 24 hours after the snow fell on December 18th the lawns were covered in a veritable myriad of animal tracks. Now unfortunately I didn't get my 'tracking animals in the snow badge'  when I was in the  Boy Scouts, but I'm guessing the tracks are those of foxes and cats, mainly cats. The lawns seem to be being used as some sort of exercise yard for our four legged friends.
The hardest part of taking these pictures was getting into the grounds which is even more difficult  than normal when the lock is frozen.

PHOTOS OF THE MONTH for DECEMBER

Many thanks indeed go to Tony and Maureen for organising such a really good Christmas bash, the first of very many I hope. I for one am already looking forward to next years. Big thanks also to the Ridgeway Tavern for being such fine hosts. You'll no doubt all note the only table to be ahead of the game with the drinks menu and of course wild horses wouldn't drag from me such information as to who was virtually first to arrive at the Tavern and the last to leave....... Only wish I'd taken far more photos.

 CROQUET HAT OF THE YEAR

Below are two past entries vying for the Life Times Achievement Award.

                                                  Harpo Marx                Davy Croquet

Arthur "Harpo" Marx was inducted into the United States Croquet Hall of Fame in 1979. Harpo Marx took the game so seriously that he turned a spare bedroom into a climate-controlled storage facility for his assemblage of mallets. (Harpo liked to invite showgirls to his apartment to view his collection). Davy Croquet is seen here holding his special frontiersman mallet which could also shoot bears.

LAWNS - PHOTO SPECIAL MARCH 8th - APRIL 9th 2010

On March 8th Tom Heard started work on the lawns and gardens. Photos 1, 2 and 4 shows scarification being undertaken using a mower with special attachments. Photo 3 shows the hopper used for the special mixed feed and weed killer. Photo 5 shows Tom's lorry full of the dead grass taken from just the new North East lawn alone. Photo 6 shows the aerator in use. You might also like to note the interesting ratio of supervisors to worker in photo 7.

THE WINTER MONTHS

Some members continued to play golf croquet throughout the Winter whenever the weather permitted. Which wasn't too often this past winter.
