Enfield 14-6 Chelmsford
Enfield retained the East Anglian GC B Level Cup with a strong performance on a blustery day at Newport. Our team was Peter Brock 3 handicap, Brian Dawes 3, David Barnicoat 3 and Andrew Fall 3. Who were up against a Chelmsford’s side which comprised four very good three handicappers in Tony Frewin, John Mariner, Judith Hand and John Skuse.
The opening double rounds saw the scores level after 4 matches with David and Brian wining both their games. The third round saw Enfield win three of their four singles to take a 5-3 lead into the lunch break.
The lunches must have been really good because Enfield won the fourth round with a clean sweep to roar into 9-3 lead, a lead which they then held onto throughout. Although the following round of singles was tied at 2-2 this was enough to clinch the required eleven wins to and take the highly polished trophy back to Enfield.
Even though the final round was academic Enfield won it 3-1 which as a result meant Peter, Brian, David and Andrew had each won three of their four singles matches – a great performance by all concerned.
Our thanks go to Newport for hosting the final so well, our opponents Chelmsford for such a hard fought, yet pleasurable days play which was carried out in excellent spirit and finally to Terrey Sparks for his sterling work throughout the day.
