GC Handicap League - Enfield 15-3 Newport Elms

Enfield: Andrew Fall (4), Kim Taylor (9), Marian Cuckson (9), David Warren (11)

Newport Elms: Adrian Seabrook (3), Tim Walder (5), Fran Lambert (6), Glenys Walder (9)

Enfield started badly, losing both the doubles (Andrew & Kim v Adrian & Glenys, and Marian & David v Tim & Fran) by a consistent 6-7. But then we managed to pull ourselves together and win all the singles games bar one (David's game against Tim, in the fourth round). Joint players of the day were Kim and Marian who each won all four games, using their contrasting styles to equally deadly effect.

Thanks again to Fiona Fall, who timed the day’s games and kept us all in line without using her whistle once.

GC Handicap League - Letchworth Reds 14-4 Enfield

Letchworth Reds: David Clancey (4), Tracy Martin (6), Trisha Noble (6), Graham Styles (9)

Enfield: Andrew Fall (4), Thomas Halliday (5), Marian Cuckson (9), Mary Grove (12)

Both Enfield pairings (Andrew & Mary; Thomas & Marian) won their doubles in the first round, and we never really looked back, winning 12 of the 16 singles games that followed. Captain Andrew won all four of his singles, Marian and Mary took three apiece, and Thomas two. No player of the match: this was a real team effort to give us a 14-4 victory against a team that on paper looked difficult to beat.

Thanks too to Fiona Fall, who timed the day's games and kept us all in line.

GC Handicap League - Enfield 8-2 Letchworth

Enfield: Dave Hill (3), Ian Moore (9), Phillip Hawes (10), Kim Taylor (12)

Letchworth: Peter Aspinall (6), Andrea Carr (8), Ray Scroggins (12)

Originally scheduled as a straightforward match between two four-person teams, this had to be revised quickly after a member of Letchworth's team failed to show up on the morning due to confusion over dates. Rather than postpone or claim a walkover, we agreed to use the format applied to clubs with only one lawn, where teams are of three people only playing 10 games instead of the more usual 18.

Having turned up to play, Dave Hill teamed up with Ian Moore to play the sole doubles game against Peter Aspinall and Andrea Carr; this was won by Letchworth. Dave then stepped down and left Ian, Phillip Hawes and Kim Taylor to play out the nine all-play-all singles against Peter, Andrea and Ray Scroggins.

Enfield won eight of these games to give us a final 8-2 win. Both Ian and Kim won all three of their singles, while Phillip won two; all three players reduced their handicaps. Player of the match by a whisker was Kim Taylor, making his debut for an Enfield team, whose skills left at least one member of the Letchworth team visibly moved.

GC Handicap League - Enfield 10-8 Meldreth

Enfield: Andrew Fall (5), Thomas Halliday (9), Marian Cuckson (9), David Warren (12)

Meldreth: John Bishop (7), Roger Wallbridge (8), Janet Pope (10), Sue Bishop (11)

The Enfield GC Handicap team managed a tight 10-8 win against a strong visiting Meldreth side on Friday the 3rd of May.

Enfield started well, winning both the doubles matches at the start of the day. Then Thomas Halliday and David Warren, both making their debuts for an Enfield team, won three of their four singles games. The more experienced members of the team, Marian Cuckson and captain Andrew Fall, could only contribute one singles game apiece to the Enfield total.

Player of the match was David Warren who, playing John Bishop in the final game of the day, took him to and beat him in a very dogged golden hoop to give Enfield the 10-8 win instead of a 9-9 tie.
