Gillian Porter

16 players took part in our last monthly tournament of the year which was won by Kim with five wins and one draw out of six games. In second place Michael Broadway with four wins and one draw.

It was a very enjoyable day with ideal weather for once – not too hot or cold, or rain. Thank you to all who took part and also for helping to set up and put away all the equipment.

The next 10-10 will take place on Thursday 2 April 2026 – the first monthly tournament of the year.

We had two players still tied after that, and so we turn to hoop difference. There, Nigel edges out Jagruti and I can announce that Nigel is the winner of the 2025 Ladder League.

Congratulations to Nigel, and also to September's best player, Brian Dawes, who won all four games for a late surge back into form.

GC Handicap League Final at Wrest Park
Saturday 27 September - Gillian Porter

Congratulations Enfield East for reaching the final against Colchester but unfortunately we didn’t come away with the winner’s trophy. The final score 12 - 6.

The team on the day: Jagruti Gandhi, Colin Carver, Kim Taylor and Patrick Beecham.

Others playing for Enfield East this year were: Phillip Hawes, Mary Grove, Rob Havill, Colin Bateman, Ian Moore, Chris Twomey and Thomas Halliday. Thank you all for taking part and getting us through to the final. Well done everyone.

Enfield East Overcome Wrest Park to Reach GC Handicap League Final
Saturday 13 September - Thomas Halliday

In the semifinal of the EACF Handicap League, held at neutral venue Watford, Enfield East came out on top in a 13-5 win.

East had won the Central Division, with their opponents Wrest Park having won the Western Division, each dropping a single match in the process.

The initial round of doubles was shared, with Enfield's Colin Carver and Chris Twomey succumbing quickly 1-7 against Gill Brewer and Tony Meredith. Meanwhile, Thomas Halliday and Rob Havill were in a very tight match against Peter Rothwell and Chris Harrison. Chris H had accidentally gone to the wrong venue and so the match began as two balls against one. With Enfield only 2-0 ahead by the time he arrived, it could have been much worse, and they put up a good fight. Enfield eventually triumphed 7-6.

The singles began very well, with a clean sweep for Enfield to give us a 5-1 lead, before Colin and Thomas dropped games to Peter and Gill respectively, leaving a 7-3 score at lunch.

Chris T managed a solid 7-4 win over Gill in the third round despite the pair of them getting lost, contesting the wrong hoop for a while and having to have a penalty area restart - a rare scenario! Gill commented that Chris was exceptional at jawsing. Rob suffered his first defeat to Peter, and Thomas left it too late to come back from 2-6 down against Tony, losing 5-7. Colin made short work of Chris H to give us, at worst, a draw. However, a draw wouldn't be enough on net hoops, with Wrest Park's wins with much bigger margins than ours.

We went into the final round knowing that one more win would be enough. It was the debutant Rob who got there first - a quick 7-5 win over Gill. Thomas scored 11 hoops to beat Chris H 7-3, and Chris T managed to pip Peter 7-6 to be unbeaten in singles. Colin finished the job with a 7-6 win over Tony.

So, a 13-5 win, and we travel to Wrest Park in two weeks to face the winners of Colchester and Unity (Sudbury), who play tomorrow (Sunday).

There were three (!) handicap improvements today. Colin went from a 4 to a 3, Rob from a 10 to a 9, and Chris from a 12 to an 11. Well done everyone!

Letchworth Triumph Over Enfield in GC Open League
Friday 5 September

Tough opposition what with -1, 0 and 2 handicappers. Kim Taylor, David Barnicoat, Colin Carver and Nigel Owen taking part in the match. Colin says he was very lucky to win all his singles matches but felt he was playing his best ever croquet. Other team members did not fare as well in their singles games. Enfield lost both of their doubles matches.

A win to Letchworth 11-7 means Enfield have come 4th in the league. The overall winners being Watford with Letchworth as runners up.

Nigel Owen Wins Chairman's Cup
Thursday 4 September - Thomas Halliday

Nigel Owen has won this year’s Chairman’s Cup (GC handicap tournament) with Andrew Yianni a worthy runner-up.

Only one game went to time all day, which was Nigel and Colin Bateman in the quarterfinals. The score was 4-4 at time with Nigel progressing because he had scored 8 of the 11 hoops he needed, a higher proportion than Colin's 4 of 7.

So the final was between Andrew Yianni and Nigel.

After an intense hoop 14, with Nigel sticking in the jaws at the first two attempts and being cleared from behind, he ran it beautifully at the third time of asking to become Chairman's Cup winner 2025.

An unbeaten day for Nigel, well done!

Kim Taylor Wins Watford GC Open Series Tournament
Saturday 30, Sunday 31 August

Thomas Halliday and Kim both entered this competition with both finishing second in their blocks at the end of the first day and progressing to the quarterfinals.

Unfortunately Thomas was knocked out in the quarterfinal beaten by top seed Konstantin Yudintsev (Sussex County) 6-7, 7-3, 7-6.

Kim made in through to the final against Mike Hills (Northampton) and won 7-5, 7-5 to become Enfield's first ever Open Series champion!

Full report on Watford's website

Kim puts his ball in the jaws of hoop 12 with both opponent's balls on the West boundary. Eventually tapping it though to win the tournament.

Enfield East Finish Top of GC Handicap League
Monday 25 August - Thomas Halliday

In what was effectively a final for the Central Division of the Handicap League, we hosted Meldreth, winner takes all.

Enfield started brightly with two wins in the doubles, both 7-5. This proved to be crucial as the singles swung in both directions. After Ian Moore and Roger Wallbridge completed a marathon 2.5 hour game, time was against us, but Enfield managed to hold a 10-4 lead after the third singles round, guaranteeing us the league win.

Roger and Chris Twomey called their last games a tie. Ian and I were soundly beaten by our higher handicap opponents. Phillip Hawes was unlucky in the last game, losing 7-6 on the 16th (!) hoop when his opponent pulled off an extraordinary stop shot with white and pink balls almost touching, sending his pink to a position perfectly wired from green, dead in front of the hoop.

Enfield East progress to the semifinal against probably Wrest Park, who will win the Western Division unless Stony Stratford can pull off a massive win in their final match. Easters, watch your inboxes and clear your diaries!

10-7 final score, 94 hoops to 92.

Thanks also to our fan club - we had four from Enfield and six from Meldreth spectating at various times. Iced water and cold beer was very, very welcome.

Enfield West also deserve plaudits for finishing second and being the only team to beat Enfield East!

Julie Emery Crowned Short Croquet Champion

Saturday 23 August - Gillian Porter

Winner Julie Congratulated by Tournament Manager Colin

The second Short Croquet fun tournament was held today. Despite some people being away there were 9 entries with Jagruti Gandhi & Suzanne Twomey teaming up together making 8 sides.

A draw was held at 10:00 and double banked games held on both half lawns. All games started simultaneously at 10:15 with a 75 minute time limit.

Julie & Sue Gillett both managed to peg their balls out within the time limit to get their wins. Nigel Owen beat Jagruti/Suzanne 8-5. Malcolm Perkin just scraped a win over Graham Curtis 8-7 when Graham's last shot, a long distance hoop attempt to draw level, was declared, by the tournament ref (Colin Carver), not through by 1 mm.

So, after a comfort break, cup of tea, some now famous magic biscuits and competitors discussing possible tactics, round 2 kicked off at 11:50. Round 1 winners were matched against other winners & runners up against other runners up.

In the battle of the regular AC team players Malcolm triumphed 8-6 over Nigel. However, the key match proved to be Julie against Sue with Julie taking a narrow victory 9-8.

So with Julie & Malcolm winning both their games it was down to hoop difference.
Julie was duly crowned the champion with +7 hoops to Malcolm's +3.

Colin was very impressed with the standard of play and absence of questions during the games. He was beginning to think that everyone had understood and remembered what was taught in the coaching sessions. On the other hand, maybe they were just making up their own rules as they went along! Anyway, everyone seemed to enjoy the games and congratulations to our winner Julie.

Also many thanks to Colin for organising the tournament and even including a mid tournament tea break.

Enfield East Beat Finchley Victoria in GC Handicap League
Friday 22 August - Nigel Owen

Enfield East secured a 10-4 home victory over Finchley Victoria, with Colin Bateman the standout performer, winning all four of his games - an excellent start to his ECC career.

The result leaves East at the top of the Central Division with 8 points and a +18 game difference, with one match still to play. Enfield West sit second on 8 points (+14) but have completed their fixtures, while Newport are third on 8 points (+4). Meldreth, currently fourth with 7 points (+4), also have one game in hand.

This sets up a decisive clash on Monday when Enfield East host Meldreth. The equation is simple: if East win or draw, they take the division title; if they lose, the crown goes to Meldreth.

Meldreth Defeat Enfield West in GC Handicap League

Thursday 21 August - Nigel Owen

The Enfield team travelled to Meldreth to play at their picturesque single court club set in the grounds of a popular pub.

The match began promisingly with Graham Curtis taking his opening singles game. However, Nigel Owen and Andrew Yianni lost the doubles, and from there the momentum swung firmly to the hosts.

Meldreth went on to win seven of the remaining eight games, securing a convincing 8-2 victory.

Enfield West Overpower Newport at Home in GC Handicap League
Monday 18 August - Nigel Owen

After a string of long hard fought games – one doubles took 2 hours - Enfield West came through in the end winning 15 games to 3.

Watford Beat Enfield in the GC 3+ League
Thursday 14 August - Colin Carver

Enfield's B-Level team played their final match of the season at Watford today. Despite drafting in club chairman Frank Palmer and also Michael Broadway for his inside knowledge of the Watford lawns they came up short.

Watford won both the doubles and held a 6-4 lead at lunch. Watford then took all the games in the afternoon bar the very last which Colin just managed to steal.

Enfield remain 1 clear at the top of the table but with Watford still to play their final match later in the month it's unlikely to remain that way.

Finalists Colin Carver and Elaine Smith

Colin Carver Wins Cheltenham High Bisque AC Tournament

Tuesday 12 August - Adam Moliver at Cheltenham

August saw the two day Cheltenham High Bisque tournament. Managed by Adam Moliver with help from Darryl Whitehead. This is a mix of play and coaching.

Day one was three games of 18 points, full-bisque, base five.

Day two was 22 point games for the semi finals and final while others had coaching and/or coached/supervised games.

Two hot days, especially the second day, led to a final between Elaine Smith (Cheltenham) and Colin Carver (Enfield). Colin won and as a result had a two step handicap change; long overdue!

Along the way we had one accidentally pegged-out game leading to a one-ball game finish and another game ending in an exciting golden hoop.

Players struggeld with fast lawns on day one, but overnight storms and a pre-set irrigation schedule led to more forgiving conditions on day two.

For those new to AC this is a good way to get into tournament play.

Enfield East Beat Barnet Cavaliers 12–2 to Go Second in GC Handicap League
Monday 11 August - Thomas Halliday

A win for Enfield East over Dave Hill's visiting Barnet Cavaliers today. I believe the final round of singles was abandoned as Enfield had already won.

East join West on 6 points, but edge ahead on net games to move into second. Both of our teams still have two matches to play, and both are playing Meldreth, who are still in with a chance on 5 points. We're still behind Newport on 8 points, but West are playing them in their final match. All to play for!

Andrew Yianni Retains Sheila Rudling Cup in Close-Fought Final

Thursday 7 August - Gillian Porter

A very enjoyable and entertaining day was spent by me and 11 other club members on Thursday contesting the Sheila Rudling Cup (GC level play high handicap, 7+). Divided into two groups we each played 5 games. The outcome of which was a final contest between Andrew Yianni and Phillip Hawes. The winner being Andrew (for the second year running). The score 7-5.

Thanks go to Graham who sorted out the results of everyone’s games, and to all those who brought cakes! Andrew might have received a cup, but Phillip got a cake!

Lovely to have a visitor in the morning - Alan Bateman – looking very hale and hearty.

Letchworth Edge Out Enfield in AC Beds & Herts League

Monday 28 July - Colin Carver

Another long home AC match today, with five of the six games against Letchworth, going to full time.

In the doubles, David Frost and Malcolm Perkin took the win in a close game 14-12. Malcolm's first win, of what will be hopefully many, for the club. Nigel Owen & Colin Carver were 9 hoops behind at time to make the score 1-1 at lunch.

Unfortunately, Enfield had an afternoon collapse with only Colin picking up a win.

So a 4-2 win for Letchworth. Although Enfield remain second in the league, they can't now catch leaders St Albans and a couple of teams also have a game in hand.

Enfield Scrape a Win Against Wrest Park in the GC 3+ League

Friday 25 July - Nigel Owen

On a fine summer’s day at Enfield, the home side hosted Wrest Park in a tightly contested match that went right down to the wire.

The day began with two doubles matches. Colin Carver and Phillip Hawes - making his debut in the Level Play league - were involved in a marathon battle against Tim Brewer and Chris Harrison, eventually losing 5-7 after 90 gruelling minutes. Meanwhile, Nicola Hyde and Nigel Owen levelled the match with a solid win over Richard Keighley and Gill Brewer.

Wrest Park's Gill Brewer Attempts a Long Jump Shot

Wrest Park then took the upper hand in the first round of singles, winning three of the four games to lead 4-2. They maintained that two-game advantage after the second round, heading into the afternoon 6-4 ahead.

But Enfield began to claw their way back in the third round, drawing level at 7-7, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. In the final round of singles, the home side held their nerve, winning enough games to edge ahead 10-8.

Wrest Park had the option of playing the final doubles for a possible draw, but after some discussion chose not to proceed, leaving Enfield as the narrow winners.

A strong team performance from Enfield, with special mention to Phillip for an excellent debut - winning two singles against lower-handicapped opponents.

And finally, a big thank you to Julie Emery for bringing cold beers for the teams – a perfect way to toast a hard-earned win!

Barnet Roundheads Overcome Enfield West in GC Handicap League

Friday 18 July - Frances Broadway

On one of the hottest days of the year, Enfield West played Barnet Roundheads at home. The team consisted of Frances Broadway, Graham Curtis, Sue Gillett and Frank Palmer.

The lawns played extremely fast making it difficult for anyone to place the balls just where they wanted. The score was one apiece after the doubles matches but in the next two rounds Barnet went ahead, the score at lunchtime being 7 - 3.

Enfield rallied briefly after lunch winning 3 out of the 4 games in round three. Going into the final round Enfield needed to win all the games to secure a win or 3 out of the 4 to draw. Despite valiant attempts it was not to be and the final score was Enfield West 7 - Barnet Roundheads 11.

Enfield West just hold on to their position as leaders in the league but now only on net hoops.

Croquet East Visit Enfield
Sunday 13 July - Kim Taylor

We hosted Croquet East for the first time last year and on a blisteringly hot Sunday, we were again joined by the youthful and exuberant players from the social croquet club - based in Mile End Park - for a few friendly rounds of GC and AC.

Naturally, some of the ECC crew couldn't help but show off - Jean Dawes pulled off one of the best long distance double clearances ever witnessed! Sue Gillett and Jagruti Gandhi added to their reputations as outright bandits. Croquet East have so many talented players - we hope to see them back here soon.

A good time was had by all, with some committed guests staying into the early evening.

Thank you to all who attended and helped behind the scenes to make the event a huge success. Thanks also to Joe Taylor for the lovely carrot cake and documenting the day.

Murphy Shield Quarterfinal - Enfield Narrowly Beaten by Watford at Home

Friday 11 July - Thomas Halliday

The day began with a win in the doubles, as Thomas and David Frost combined well to beat Simon Hathrell and Geoff Johnson 7-3, 7-5. Meanwhile, Nigel Owen lost to George Skinner 6-7, 3-7. Nicola Hyde battled hard in her match against Alan Clark, taking it to a deciding third game, but was edged out 6-7 - a result that proved pivotal.

The afternoon brought four best-of-three singles. Thomas clinched a thrilling win over Simon, finishing with a dramatic jump shot to take the final game 7-6. David continued his excellent form with a convincing 7-4, 7-3 win over Geoff but Watford sealed their place in the semifinals with wins in the remaining singles: George beat Nicola 7-6, 7-3, while Alan again proved difficult to overcome, defeating Nigel 7-6, 7-5.

Final Score: Enfield 3 – Watford 4

A strong team performance in a hard-fought match. Congratulations to Watford on their win, and well done to all the Enfield players involved throughout the Shield run – including Kim Taylor, Colin Carver, and Graham Curtis – for helping the club reach the last eight.

Enfield Defeat Northampton at Home in GC 3+ League

Friday 4 July - Colin Carver

What a fantastic day for a croquet match. Sunny, 25°C, cooling breeze and friendly opposition. Some would say the lightening fast lawns where tricky but you can't please everyone all of the time.

Nicola Hyde & Colin slipped up against Northampton's number one, Liz Bulbeck, in the morning. However, the discovery of some "magic cookies' in the Hut returned them to their winning ways, with Nicola winning her next game 7-0.

The ever consistent Nigel Owen and Andrew Yianni won all of their games to enable Enfield to pick up a comfortable 16-2 victory. This should put Enfield top of the league with 2 games still to play.

Michael Broadway Wins One Ball Monthly Tournament After Close Contest

Thursday 3 July - Thomas Halliday

Seven players entered today's One Ball competition, which was an all play all block.

Michael was the winner with 5/6 wins. I had an identical record to Michael but as my one loss came to him, he was declared the winner on 'who beat whom'.

Frances Broadway and Kim Taylor had 3/6 wins, with Frances coming 3rd on 'who beat whom'. Frank Palmer and Colin Bateman were likewise 5th and 6th respectively on 2/6 wins, and John Street ended 7th on 1/6 wins.

Enfield Defeated by Watford Powerhouse in GC Open League

Wednesday 2 July - Nigel Owen and Thomas Halliday

With a Watford ball in the jaws of hoop 1 in one of the opening doubles, Thomas secured the hoop with an incredible jump shot from 45 degrees near the south boundary and that was the first of two similar jump shots from Thomas in the same game.

Despite that impressive start (those were our only two points in that game!) our challenge for the GC Open League ended today with a 14-4 defeat away at Watford. The two big teams in this league - Watford and Northampton - have shown this year why they are the only two to have won it. We have one more chance to solidify our position as best of the rest.

MVP from an Enfield standpoint was Nigel. Playing his first match in the Open team, he won half our points, including a famous 7-5 win over Nick Archer (-2 handicap), just ahead of Nick travelling to play a test match as part of the England squad. Nigel has now improved his handicap to 4!

Enfield West Edge Out Barnet Cavaliers in GC Handicap League
Wednesday 25 June - Nigel Owen

Enfield West secured a narrow 6-4 victory away to Barnet Cavaliers under warm summer skies.

In the first round Nigel Owen and Frances Broadway lost the doubles 6-7 but Andrew Yianni won his singles game 7-3.

We managed to pull ahead by winning both singles in round 2 and kept our lead by the end of round 3. Enfield perhaps relaxed a bit too much over lunch as Barnet fought valiantly taking both games in round 4 including their most convincing performance of the day a 7-1 win from Diana Joannides, to level the match 4 all.

In the final round Enfield won both games meaning each Enfield player won two out of three singles - enough to win the match 6-4.

Enfield's Bisque Bonanza Secures Win at Wrest Park in AC Beds & Herts League

Thursday 19 June - Thomas Halliday

The AC Beds & Herts League is getting exciting! Today, in intense heat, we took a 4-2 away win at Wrest Park. Featuring a team with an aggregate handicap of 66 against their sum total of 11.5, we had a forest of bisques all day.

Everyone struggled with the conditions which were lightning fast and unpredictable even by Wrest Park's standards. The two doubles games both finished level on time and were decided by golden hoop. Colin Carver and Nigel Owen won theirs 16-15. Playing alternate strokes on his club debut, Malcolm Perkin had a choice of a 14 yard roquet or a six yard hoop shot, where success meant winning and failure a probable loss. He took on the hoop and bounced off the wire, and we lost 13-12.

Into the singles, Eric Audsley gave Malcolm a lesson in break building to win 26-2. Thomas was cruising to a 26-0 win but failed the last hoop, and David Marsh, a -1 handicap, went round to peg. After a bit of to and fro, Thomas eventually won 26-13. Nigel played a 'controlled, measured game', according to his opponent to win with bisques to spare, and Colin sealed the match win +13 on time.

The result puts us temporarily top of the league, but having played a game more than close rivals St Albans.

Enfield Through to Quarter Finals of Murphy Shield

Friday 13 June - Thomas Halliday

Thomas Halliday, David Frost, Colin Carver and Graham Curtis played at home in the final match of the week, and it's another win!

Leighton-Linslade opened quickly and led 2-1 at lunch. But the singles matches largely went with handicap, and I for one was very relieved not to have to play a decider after taking three hours to beat John Watson 7-6 7-6.

We're in the quarterfinals of the Murphy Shield, which will be a home tie against local rivals Watford.

Enfield East Break Deadlock to Defeat Newport in GC Handicap League

Thursday 12 June - Thomas Halliday

Match 2 of the week saw Enfield East travel to table-toppers and defending champions Newport. The team was Thomas Halliday, Ian Moore, Chris Twomey, and Patrick Beecham, sporting a handicap range of 1 to 18. It was scorching weather throughout, and the play was excellent from everyone.

Going into the final round, we had shared every round evenly, and the score was 7-7. Newport's Brenda Baker beat all of our players despite this being her competitive debut. In that final round, she played a perfect approach to the final hoop, leaving Ian unable to prevent the score.

But in a late surge, Thomas scored all 10 hoops in his game to level things 8-8, Patrick finished off a confident 7-2 win over Newport's #1 Anne Taylor, and (aided by a decisive wrong ball from his opponent) Chris brought home an Enfield win, 10-8.

East move into 3rd in the division, and open the door for West to overtake Newport. Over to you, West.

Enfield See Off Newport in GC Open League

Monday 9 June - Thomas Halliday

Our Enfield team saw off Newport 13-5 at home in the Open League to keep alive our title hopes after Northampton humbled us last time out. Those playing: Kim Taylor, Thomas Halliday, David Frost and Colin Carver.

Enfield Beat Leighton Linslade After Final Doubles Thriller in GC 3+ League

Friday 6 June - Peter Brock

It was a close match at home with both sides being equal after 18 matches. This meant that we had to play a further two doubles which I’m pleased to say, we won both relatively easy. Colin Carver played very well as usual, winning all four of his matches.

Leighton Linslade won the B Level League last year which means the way we’re playing, we have a very good chance of winning the league this year. Result 11-9 to Enfield. The team: Peter Brock, Graham Curtis, Nigel Owen and Colin Carver.

Kim Taylor Wins Kwik Croquet Monthly Tournament

Thursday 5 June - Thomas Halliday

After three rounds in the Kwik Croquet Tournament (a new version of Croquet which incorporates some aspects of AC and GC) the six intrepid players were defeated by the rain and decided to call it a day. Of the players, Kim Taylor was unbeaten, Nigel Owen the runner up, with Graham Curtis in third place.

Enfield Draw Against Watford in AC Beds and Herts League

Wednesday 4 June - Thomas Halliday

Final Moments of Colin's Singles
Our visit to Watford resulting in a second draw (3 all) means that we're still unbeaten this year, but also winless depending on how full your glass is.

Colin Carver won his singles match. The other points came from Nigel Owen in the singles and the pairing of John Street and Nigel in the doubles, who won 26-0. Nigel won his singles game so quickly he played a first-to-14 point game and won that too. Apparently we can't count that as a bonus point.

I've done some digging and the last time our AC team played and lost a match in the Beds & Herts League was away to Letchworth on the 1st of June 2022. Not a bad streak.

Enfield West Victorious Versus Finchley Victoria in GC Handicap League

Tuesday 3 June - Nigel Owen

Nigel's Jump Saves the Hoop
Enfield West secured a strong 13–5 win away at Finchley Victoria, who are in their first season competing in the league. Although new to the competition, Finchley Victoria are no strangers to us, with past encounters in North London Derby friendlies over the last two years.

Representing Enfield were Nigel Owen, Graham Curtis, Frances Broadway and Andrew Yianni. The team got off to a great start, winning both doubles matches.

Singles matches were competitive throughout. A brief 10-minute pause due to an afternoon shower did little to disrupt the rhythm of play. While no Enfield player won all their singles, it was a balanced performance across the board. Likewise, every Finchley Victoria player managed to pick up at least one singles win, showing promising depth in their debut season.

Northampton Beat Enfield in GC Open League
Thursday 22 May - Thomas Halliday

We started brightly, but the visitors built a head of steam, and we ended up losing 15-3, with points only coming from Kim Taylor against Lionel Tibble, Colin Carver against Glynis Davies, and Kim & Colin against Lionel & Glynis. The other Enfield team members were Thomas Halliday and Peter Brock.

Enfield Win at Letchworth in GC 3+ League

Saturday 17 May

Enfield recorded a 15–3 victory away at Letchworth. The team featured Nicola Hyde, Colin Caver, Nigel Owen, and Graham Curtis. Both Colin and Graham remained unbeaten throughout the day, winning all their games—a performance that saw both players earn handicap reductions.

Kim Taylor Wins Eastbourne GC A-Level Tournament

Friday 16, Saturday 17 May

Silverware Secured from Sunny Eastbourne. Fiona and Andrew Fall, Kim (c).

Kim Taylor emerged victorious at the Eastbourne GC A-Level (0+) Tournament, winning five out of seven games in his block. One of his two losses came against former Enfield member Andrew Fall. With two other players also finishing with five wins, Kim’s superior net hoops score of +11 secured him first place in the block.

The knockout stage featured best-of-three matches. Kim continued his strong form, winning each round in straight games—no deciders needed. In the final, he defeated Richard Brooks in two closely fought games, 7-6, 7-6, to claim the title and a place in the series national final.

Enfield East Beat Barnet Roundheads in GC Handicap League
Tuesday 13 May

The Enfield team — Ian Moore, Patrick Beecham, and Colin Carver — got off to a flying start at Barnet, taking a commanding 4-0 lead by lunchtime.

However, Barnet mounted an impressive comeback, narrowing the gap and putting pressure on the visitors. Despite the momentum shift, Enfield held their nerve and pulled ahead once again to secure a well-earned 6-4 victory.

Well done to the team for a strong performance and great resilience!

John Street Wins Charity One Ball Qualifier

Tuesday 6 May - Thomas Halliday

With £131 raised for The Alzheimer's Society two players qualify.

An incredibly close result at the Charity One Ball Qualifier today. With eight entrants, it was an all-play-all format. New member Malcolm Perkin played admirably for his first time seeing a bisque, and although he finished with only one win against Michael Broadway, it was in one way crucial. Michael finished seventh with three wins, and everybody else finished on four wins out of seven. Had Michael beaten Malcolm, it would have been a seven-way tie instead of a six-way tie.

So, on to net hoops. With the top two qualifying for the National Final, One Ball debutant Andrew Yianni and John Street were top with a +12 hoop difference, with John the overall winner on who beat whom. Andrew is unable to attend the final, so we're still working out which is the next available player.

1st John Street
2nd Andrew Yianni
3rd Nigel Owen
4th David Frost
5th Frances Broadway
6th Thomas Halliday
7th Michael Broadway
8th Malcolm Perkin

Rare Win for Enfield at Wrest Park in GC Open League
Friday 2 May - Thomas Halliday

Wrest Park 7-11 Enfield

An unbeaten day for Kim Taylor as Enfield beat Wrest Park for only the second time in the GC Open League. We won both doubles matches before trading singles matches. We edged ahead 9-5 after the third singles round, and consolidated the win in the sunshine. Biggest drama of the day, though, was an attempted jump shot from me in which the glue failed in my nice new mallet, and the head shot off 15 metres into the air, flying from the short boundary halfway down the lawn. A replacement handle is already on its way...

Colin Carver and Gillian Porter win GC Handicap (Advantage) Doubles

Colin & Gillian were the clear winners with 4 wins from 5 games. Followed by three pairs on 3 wins each.

Well done, too, to Mary Grove and Phillip Hawes for the biggest individual scalp of the day, beating Kim Taylor and Brian Dawes 7-2 in handicap terms (which translates to a 7-6 win even if it had been level play!).

Enfield Tie with St Albans in AC Beds & Herts League
Monday 28 April - Thomas Halliday

Enfield 3-3 St Albans.

Our MVP was debutant Colin Carver, winning in both the doubles with me as partner and in the singles. Peter Brock got our crucial third point with a convincing but stylistically unconventional 21-6 singles win on time.

Heather Bennett led the St Albans charge, narrowly holding off Peter and David Frost in the doubles and putting together two great breaks for a comeback win over David. I was forced into a three-ball endgame in the singles and despite the advantage of having both my balls, couldn't bridge the gap in time.

Colin Carver (5)

Kim Taylor & David Frost beat Alex Lake & Colin Carr 7-5, 3-7, 7-4

Colin Taylor beat Colin Carver 7-6, 7-5

John Bishop beat Peter Brock 7-2, 4-7, 7-5

Kim Taylor beat Alex Lake 7-5, 5-7, 7-4

David Frost beat Colin Carr 7-4, 7-3

Colin Taylor beat Peter Brock 2-7, 7-6, 7-5

Colin Carver beat John Bishop 7-4, 7-3

A grizzled Enfield squad headed up the M11 to sunny Newport to face a very strong home team. A tight battle ensued.

Kim Taylor and David Frost were a potent combination in the doubles, Taylor clearing effectively and Frost sniping hoops from anywhere, though they made an absolute pig’s ear of their jumpshots. Their good form carried over to their singles matches.

Debutant Colin “The Kid” Carver wasn’t hanging around, losing in straight games in the morning but repaying his captain’s faith with a vital 2-0 victory in the afternoon, thus securing first dibs on the delicious homemade cakes.

In a conclave of Colins, Colin-of-the-Day went to Colin Taylor, who won 4 out of 5 of his games.

Thanks to Alex, Colin, Colin, and John for some closely fought games played in good spirit.

Thanks also to everyone at Newport for a typically warm welcome and excellent lawns.

Enfield Beat Barnet in Round 1 of GC 3+ League

Tuesday 22 April - Nicola Hyde

On Tuesday Enfield welcomed Barnet in the first GC 3+ Level Play tournament. Enfield’s team comprised Nicola Hyde, Colin Carver, Nigel Owen and Andrew Yianni and it’s fair to say that our handicap level was superior to that of Barnet.

There were some enthusiastic performances from Ian Davidson, Nicola Mack, Diana Joannides and ex Enfield member, David Warren. However, we had the upper hand throughout with a final score of 16-2.

Ian for Barnet did manage to confound the handicap difference and win a game but not to be outdone Andrew did the same for Enfield.

The weather was great - not too hot and not too cold - and it was a most enjoyable day.
Enfield West Win Close Match in Round 1 of GC Handicap League
Monday 14 April - Nicola Hyde

There was an air of anticipation and excitement as Enfield East and Enfield West came together for the first EACF GC Handicap league game of the season. Taking stage for Team East was Phillip Hawes, Mary Grove, Patrick Beecham and making her debut, Jagruti Gandhi.
Team West comprised Nicola Hyde, Graham Curtis, Andrew Yianni and Frank Palmer.

The day started comfortably for Team West as they won the doubles and the first round of singles with three wins. However, Team East got into their stride after lunch taking control in the second round of singles. Two wins apiece in the final two rounds indicated what a close session it had been. How close? Ultimately a 10-8 win for Team West but with only one additional hoop being scored (East 100 - West 101). It promises to be a good season!

Phillip Hawes Wins 1st Club Tournament of 2025

Thursday 3 April - 10-10 Golf Croquet Doubles

Thomas Halliday

Well done Phillip, and indeed everyone. Nobody was winless!

The tightest match was certainly Kim Taylor & Sue Gillett vs Peter Brock & Frances Broadway. Kim levelled the game at 6-6, and time was then called straight after. Peter & Frances had two minutes on the clock to score the final winning point, but Kim & Sue defended valiantly for all that time. The clock went dead, leaving a final score of 6-6.

The results are as follows:

1st - Phillip Hawes, 5 wins

2nd - Kim Taylor, 4 wins and 1 draw

3rd - Colin Carver, 4 wins, +4 hoop difference

4th - Thomas Halliday, 4 wins, +3 hoop difference

On 3 wins - Graham Curtis and Mary Grove

On 2 wins - Nicola Hyde, John Street, Andrew Yianni, David Barnicoat, Jagruti Gandhi

On 1 win and a draw - Sue Gillett, Peter Brock, Frances Broadway

On 1 win - David Frost, Michael Broadway

Birthday Party

Saturday 22 March

The club was hired for the afternoon to help celebrate a birthday.

Two half lawns were set up: 2.1 and 2.2 and a full size lawn on lawn 3. The party were the first to use our new lawns which were marked out on Wednesday 12th. (Club members are still using the winter lawn until Saturday 29th.)

The birthday boy and friends enjoyed some beers, pizza and social croquet. It looked like everyone had a good time (we certainly hope so) and we enjoyed hosting them.
